Prayer, Fellowship & Food

// February 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

God’s heart is with His people. He loves how we are pursuing Him in fasting, prayer, worship and praise. This fast is not to be legalistic, but a joy and a blessing. Our goal is God and He already knows our hearts. It was not Daniel’s diet that made him a mighty man of God, God made him who he was as Daniel devoted himself to God in prayer.

PRAYER: Prayer is our priority. 3 times a day! Use any cravings as a reminder to pray. If your mind has ever wandered in prayer, check this out: http://www.ibelin.me/iBelin/blog/Entries/2009/2/26_reProgramming_the_mind.html

Please go to this site and lift up your sisters and brothers in prayer: http://www.kindlejoy.com/group/danielfast. This is an excellent site for keeping track of prayers and praises. Add your own prayer concerns. Be sure to lift of your pastors, leaders and families.

Remember, in prayer you should also listen. God’s got a Word for you that doesn’t have to come through anyone else.

FELLOWSHIP: Consider getting together with friends and family for fellowship and prayer weekly during the fast. Many of us will be going to weekly services, but these may not allow us the chance to touch, love, laugh, eat, pray and share as we could in smaller, more intimate settings. Invite someone who is not in your usual circle and let them experience the Christ in you.

Have a potluck fellowship and ask folk to bring something tasty you can perhaps prepare yourself another time.

FOOD: Be sure to eat beans, seeds and nuts daily. Tofu is great (though it causes gas in some of us…TMI). Canned beans are good if you check to be sure they don’t have too much sodium. Hummus and carrots make a great snack. Keep a snack with you at all times as may prevent you from snapping on someone…

Choose foods that are deep and rich in color. Go for darker greens (iceberg is like chewing water and has about the same nutritional value) like kale, mustards, turnips, collards, spinach and cabbage with the dark leaves still on. You can sautee’ greens in olive oil, add garlic, baking soda (helps to keep ’em green), a bay leaf if you like. Lower the heat way down, cover tightly and they will cook in their own juices (but keep an eye on it).

Go for some squashes. Try some with which you might be unfamiliar. Many can go in the oven and don’t require too much attention. Don’t turn ur noses up at canned veggies either. Frozen veggies are good too.

Eat brown rice. Make it in large amounts, put what you don’t eat in the fridge and you are good to go the next time. Use it in a stir fry of mushrooms, onions, peppers and whatever you have left from previous meals. Season it and go to town. I like to eat something like this from a bowl with a big spoon.

Oatmeal with flaxseed and berries will get you going in the morning and stick with you for a while.

Some folk are enjoying veggie burgers. Give them a try if you haven’t already. Avocados are really satisfying (high is good fat and calories though) and delicious with salt and pepper.

Try out a lot of different spices. Google vegetarian or vegan recipes. If you find something really good, share it here: http://lentenfast2009.blogspot.com/2009/02/recipes.html

Man, some of y’all are really trippin’! LOL!!! We just got started and folk tryna act like they can’t live with out junk food and caffeine and meat. Just remember when you get a craving to pray, “God, I want you more than a cheeseburger! God, I need you more than coffee. God, I love you more than Krispy Kremes!” We have to stay the course. We have to pray each other up and keep each other encouraged. We cannot fail the Lord.

I’m praying with you. Call my name in prayer too!

Reprogramming the Mind

// February 25th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Romans 12:1-2

In prayer today, my mind wandered…again. I prayed out loud and sometimes when I took a breath, my mind went off down the road again. This, of course, is not earth shattering, but when my mind wanders into doubts and fears and past failures and insecurities and competition and jealousy and loneliness it very well could become life-shattering.

The mind is like the computer some of us first learned on way back in the “BASIC” programming days when the teacher told us plainly, “GIGO: GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT.” When we consider what we’ve been putting and allowing into our minds, I wonder if should we trust the destinations our minds wander off to from time to time. If we have a steady diet of violence and unkind humor and “real-” (or even “fake-”) life antics of desperate people on the TV (even though these can be very entertaining…but I digress), shouldn’t we stop our minds from rollicking wherever they choose to go?

IF we have been listening to the father of lies’ whispers and begin to doubt that God is listening or believe ourselves unfit for saving or believe that healing ain’t in the cards for us or that because we messed up we deserve what we are living through right now or we think its too late for our dreams to come true or we will have to live our whole lives alone or that life is always going to be just the way it is today, THEN we really should not trust our minds right now. Reprogramming is in order!

I think this is the concern of Romans 12:1-2: that we commit ourselves to program our minds with the Word of God; biblically based songs of worship and praise (not the I-me-my focused gospel blues!); good, sound preaching from anointed men and women of God; fellowship with praying folk who are like-minded; prayer based on the Word of God; listening to God; and, just being with God.

It is essential that we reject each and every lie that passes through (or has taken up residence in) our minds and replace them with the Word of God! Start with Psalm 91 and Declare it over your life. Change the words so that you speak it to yourself in the first person:

I DWELL IN THE SECRET PLACE OF THE MOST HIGH AND I DWELL UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY…

Do this morning, noon and night until it becomes a part of you. Program yourself with this Word so you can trust your mind and where it tries to lead you.

I love u!

Thy Kingdom Come

And so it begins, this awesome Lenten journey into a closer, deeper and more powerful relationship with God. He has been waiting on us for so long, we cannot fail Him. We must remain faithful in prayer through the course of this fast. Prayer is the life’s breath of the Christian. It is through prayer that we are able to learn what is on the heart of God. It is in prayer that we lose our will in the will of God. It is by prayer that we are formed into the people God created us to be.

Think about this Lenten Fast in terms of the recovery speech. It is no mere happenstance that we are called to prayer following this speech. This time of fasting and prayer is our KAIROS MOMENT. We are called to pray the prayer of salvation for this country and the world, and not just financially. We are called to pray the Kingdom of God into our midst and into our time.

God is going to do something awesome in our time and He wants our prayerful participation.

I love you.

GET READY!!!

// February 23rd, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

The Lenten Fast is here and I am excited about this powerful combination of prayer and fasting!  The windows of Heaven are open because people from all over are coming together to pursue a deeper, more meaningful and more powerful relationship with God.  Let your expectations be high because God desires to bless His people in ways that will blow our minds.

During the fast we are devoting more time to pursuing God than we are in other pursuits.  We are rearranging our normal daily routines to include much more time with God through prayer, fasting, study, meditation, praise, worship and fellowship.  Get some good music to feed your soul, listen and feast on it during your meditation and devotion time.

PRAYER
We are praying three (3) times a day (Daniel 6:13) at 6:00 a.m., 12 noon and 6:00 p.m. CST.  It will be powerful for prayers to reach the heart of God at the same times from so many people and from so many different places.  You should consider praying at least one time a day with your prayer partners.  If you don’t have prayer partners, this is the perfect time to ask God to lead you into relationship with some praying people. Jesus says in Matthew 18:19-20, “Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”  Partnering in prayer is also great to have someone to encourage you through the fast if you start to falter, get weak or a little wishy-washy…

God has much to say to us so remember that prayer is a conversation, not a monologue.  Be sure to take time to listen to God.  And if there are no words or revelations shared, just rest in God’s Presence – this is where joy is found (Psalm 16:11).

FASTING
Fasting is a spiritual discipline that goes hand in hand with prayer.  Fasting is to abstain from food with a spiritual purpose in mind.  We are participating in a Daniel Fast which is basically eating those foods which grow out of the earth; nothing that walks, swims or crawls.

This fast may be a challenge to some, but with proper advanced planning you will meet it with grace.  Consider taking your lunch and snacks with you when you go to work or school.  This will save you money, time and aggravation.  I encourage you to post recipes in the comments sections here http://lentenfast2009.blogspot.com/2009/02/recipes.html so our friends who are not on Facebook can benefit from your suggestions too.

-Oatmeal and fruit is a good idea for breakfast.  Add some flaxseed to it (some call flaxseed the colon sweeper).
-Have fruit, raw veggies, nuts and seeds on hand for snacking during the day.
-Hummus and carrots are another good snack.
-Indian food is a good option if you have to eat out.
-This is not a starvation diet.  Eat to your fill but you probably should be careful about eating a whole bag of cashews.

STUDY
Study the Word of God.  Your sisters and brothers from across the country have written devotions based on passages from the Gospels.  Take time to read and to study these passages. The devotions will be posted on the Daniel Fast Facebook page, on http://lentenfast2009.blogspot.com and www.thisisyourwakeupcallonline.com.

We are a people formed by the Word of God.  Furthermore, the Bible holds keys to our identity, our future, our purpose, our hopes, our dreams, our healing, our salvation, our love, our joy and our peace.  It is essential that we are diligent in studying the Bible, especially during this Fast.

Read something edifying.  We are looking for holistic benefits from our Lenten Fast.  So, grab a good book and read.  What are you going to read during Lent?  Post your reading suggestions in the comments section here http://lentenfast2009.blogspot.com/2009/02/readings.html.   “Celebration of Discipline” by Richard Foster is an excellent resource on the spiritual disciplines.

Remember to post recipes, book suggestions, words of encouragement, testimonies and questions.

Daniel Fast

// February 10th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Ok Y’all! We all know our spirits, minds and bodies need this, so let’s get ready. The Daniel Fast begins on Ash Wednesday February 25, 2009 and continues through Resurrection Sunday April 12, 2009.

Here’s the plan:
We pray 3 times a day, like Daniel. 6 a.m. 12 noon and 6 p.m. (for all who want to pray at the same time no matter where we are, let’s say this is CST (Central Time).

We read a devotional based on Scripture written by FUBU (for us by us, more on this in a sec.)

We put the brakes on anything we personally know is distracting from our purposes in the fast (e.g. tv, internet, hanging out, smack talking etc.)

We eat these:
Fruits
Vegetables
Whole Grains
Nuts and Seeds
Legumes (I call ‘em beans)
Healthy Oils
Water (some folk drink herbal teas without stimulants)
Herbs, Spices, vinegar (some folk avoid this and use citrus juices with oils on their salads)
We don’t eat these:
All refined and processed foods!
Dairy
Meat
Sugar, honey etc.
Bread
Fried Foods
Unhealthy Fats (the ones that turn solid)
Anything beverage that ain’t water!

Now to the devotional: Folk r writing devotions for us already.
